After a decade of service, David Change's Ssäm Bar is still one of the city's favourites. This seminal restaurant in the Momofuku group serves up food that is as New York as it gets, inspired by his Korean-American roots, and filled with the soul of the nose to tail cooking.
Recently, this 2nd Avenue spot was given a serious facelift and menu update taking their already brilliant option and only enhancing them further. Start with small dishes like a smoked liver mouse, with currant, maitake and red mustard and follow with a whole boneless porgy Ssäm (wrap) with ginger-scallion, bean sprouts and herbs.
They don't do reservation for their a la carte menu, however, they do have a large format feast for six to ten people featuring a seven-spice beef brisket ssäm which is slow cooked and served with all the fixings including bib lettuce for wrapping, kimchee, pickles, Korean barbecue sauce, and bowls of rice.
Hitting a quintessentially New York restaurant - if you can get in, that is.
