Beachside Mexican Cuisine

A real Mexican restaurant finally arrives to Fort Lauderdale beach.

An ocean view is always a valuable asset for a restaurant to have. But once the allure of the dazzling water wears off, the eatery's food needs to step up and catch the diners attention from the first bite. This is what Lona does. From the creative mind of celebrated Mexican chef Pablo Salas - not only is this food delicious, it's delicious Mexican food. For those in constant search for authentic Mexican fare, Lona has arrived.

The menu is not expansive, but it doesn't have to be. The food isn't complicated or extravagant. And again, it doesn't need to be. It just needs to be fresh, flavorful and true.

The dishes, traditional in their soul, also feature modern twists. The fire roasted tomato salsa that is served with crispy chips when U sit down is addicting so beware. Start with the guacamole (traditional) that's topped with fresh crab (fun!). The tuna tostada is also a great appetizer with chipotle aioli, soy, ginger, serrano pepper and sesame seeds. It's small but tasty and perfect to start opening your palate.

If U fancy another small plate, try the tacos. The tacos al pastor are served with spit roasted pork, grilled pineapple, salsa verde, cilantro and onions. All tacos come with your choice of charro beans and Mexican rice or creamed corn esquites. Get the corn. Trust us.

For mains, try the pork carnitas, almost like a hearty stew in a roasted tomatillo salsa with crispy pancetta and served with corn tortillas and charro beans. Another chef specialty is the braised beef cheek with pipian sauce and pureed cauliflower.

For vegans or vegetarians (or those just wanting to taste one of the best veggie dishes) Lona has delicious options but definitely try the cabbage al fuego served with cream, cotija cheese, truffle oil, pipian sauce and cauliflower puree. U would never think cabbage could be this interesting. But U can thank us later.

There are a few desserts but the sweet empanadas stand out. Usually a savory dish, Lona's twist on this is bananas: the pastries are filled with bananas and topped with crema fresca, candied walnuts and coconut ice cream.

Let's not forget the margaritas and tequila varieties Lona offers guests. Dushan Zaric, founder of trendy cocktail bar Employees Only, has created some interesting cocktails including the spicy Breathing Lightning with Ilegal Mezcal Joven, pineapple, lime, honey-pineapple syrup and hellfire bitters.
