Tulum's Best Hangouts

Drinks industry insider Andy Kerr, co-founder of bar group The Umbrella Project, shares with U his favourite spots to while away time in Tulum.

Tulum has seen a massive change over the past 10 years, from hippy hangouts to an international jetsetter destination; but has never lost its charm. The two main areas that people frequently visit are the Beach Road and The Pueblo. The Beach Road traditionally has been where it’s at with people frequenting the eco hotels and restaurants looking for their spiritual self, however this is now beginning to change and people visiting are looking to relax and enjoy their holidays. The Pueblo is beginning to fight back, focusing on the interesting and edgy environment it offers, and taking a more down to earth outlook.

Loyal Order Beach

Opened by good friends of mine - couple, Basak Sahin and Arin Cetin this year. Their dream was to invent an openhearted place that would give them freedom to create, curate and to re-live themselves in nature, with other like-minded individuals interested in joining this quest. They wanted to move their lives elsewhere, some place that they could see thoughts are tangible. The perfect question fitted the perfect location: Turkish food in Tulum? The cuisines of Mediterranean, Aegean and Turkish cultures are very honest and expressive. The table reflects the family, and the food aims for the soul. These cuisines are mostly based on the act of sharing, passing the plate. This alone creates a conversation. Sharing food allows sharing feelings; and the table comes alive. Time passes and sometimes strangers become family. Go on a Sunday afternoon for the best chill out vibes on the beach

ARCA

ARCA nestled in the beachside jungle of Tulum, opened in 2015 and has quickly positioned itself as a relevant and pivotal component to the rising gastronomical scene in Tulum. Both the food and beverage programs pay homage to the region, using the best products from local beaches and farms. Lemongrass straws, designed and handmade by Bar Manager Diego Valencia, have replaced traditional recyclable alternatives, allowing ARCA to reduce their carbon footprint and significantly decrease their use of plastic. Former Noma Chef Jose Luis Hinostroza recently joined ARCA as Executive Chef, bringing a fresh and creative approach to jungle dining. His product-driven menu brings together the bold and explosive flavours of Mexico, executing a casual fine-dining experience with the technique and knowledge of a chef who has spent the past 10 years working in some of the best fine-dining kitchens in the world. Make sure to order the bone marrow, you won’t be disappointed!

Habitas

Habitas, Tulum is the first home of co-founders Eduardo Castillo, Kfir Levy and Oliver Ripley. It is an ocean front oasis in a wilderness that integrates each individual into its natural palapa roofs, canvas walls and a private beach; Habitas is the perfect environment for relaxation and reflection. In the heart of this oasis lies a three-story lounge, serving as the centrepiece where unique programming, gatherings, dining and musical journeys take place. Moro a Moroccan-style restaurant helmed by Chef Federico Cappi, sits at the base. Habitas, Tulum serves as home for like-minded individuals seeking connection, inspiration and a desire to share their unique stories. Recommend the Green Juice as it's a great hangover cure.

Casa Violeta

Casa Violeta is a chic and tranquil boutique hotel, located on the stunning white sand shores of Tulum, Mexico. This majestic setting is all about creating positive states of being, through the design of the outer spaces throughout the property. For centuries, Tulum has been a magnet for spiritual seekers and aesthetes alike. Drawing upon the vast healing powers of the land, Casa Violeta’s is the perfect place to tap into the richness of the Mayan culture and focus on wellbeing. Guests can select from the chef’s signature dishes, which often draw on local foods, fresh fish, wood-fired brick oven pizzas and much more using health-conscious preparations, all with the backdrop of breath-taking ocean views. Top Tip: Lunch time on the beach here is always the best.

The Umbrella Project’s Andy Kerr has created drink menus to complement Casa Pueblo’s overall inspiration - Tulum’s first stay-and-work hotel,  whilst also exploring his passions for elegantly crafted classic cocktails, for which this award-winning East London bar group, founded by Andy Kerr, Stephen Thompson and Alastair Tatton (Discount Suit Company, The Sun Tavern, Umbrella Brewing) are renowned.
