The Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo concierges share their expert tips and recommendation for things to do in and around Monaco.

Japanese Garden

Transports yourself to the land of the rising sun, even as you remain in the Principality. This garden (pictured), created in 1994 at the request of Prince Rainier III in accordance with the strictest principles of Zen and designed by landscape architect Yasuo Beppu - an ideal place to enjoy peace and quiet in this pocket of serenity. Take a stroll through the gardens and discover all the essential components of a Japanese garden: a pond, islands, a waterfall, lanterns, bridges, a tea house and a Zen garden. This green oasis is a rich mix of Japanese tradition and Mediterranean touches, the result of close collaboration between gardeners from Monaco and Japan. Free entry.

Dolceacqua

In the valley of La Nervia, a few kilometres from the French-Italian border in the province of Imperia, exists the medieval village of Dolceacqua and immortalized by Claude Monet, is really worth the detour. Waiting to be discovered is Château Doria, named after the seigneury long opposed to the Grimaldi family before the marriage of Luc Doria and Françoise Grimaldi in 1491, which brought the families together. In the village's parish church, admire the Saint Dévote altarpiece by Louis Bréa, commissioned by Françoise Grimaldi. Prince Albert II has been here on several occasions.

The Millennial Olive Tree

One of the world's oldest trees, and the oldest in France, can be seen in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin - the lovely picturesque village overlooking Monaco. Thirteen metres tall with a circumference of 20 metres, it still produces Nice's delicious little black olives. Historians and biologists have dated this tree to somewhere between 1,800 and 2,200 years old. Don't hesitate to come and give it a hug or simply gaze upon it to capture some of its astounding energy. Also, take in the spectacular views down on Monaco and across to Menton and the Italian border.
