Le Philsophe is a Noho favourite, and now Amadeus Broger has opened up a sister restaurant, L’Antagoniste, in the far reaches of Bedford-Stuyvesant - where he is a resident. Chef Frederic Robert's menu is written entirely in French and basks in French classics: foie gras with shallot chutney, duck a l'orange, frog legs, and lobster thermidor.
The wine list is impressive in its breadth encompassing bottles starting at $19 reaching to $1,999 for a bottle of Bordeaux, which is more than the average rent in this Brooklyn neighborhood. When confronted about the price bracket being out of reach of local residents, Broger countered, by saying: "I don't think people are considering that I have the same dishes as much more upscale places in Manhattan for 20% less." Some have cited the opening of L’Antagoniste as evidence of the area's swift gentrification.
