Insider Saras Rachupalli, Founder of Kovet.Art, enjoys a table with a view. Here, she shares with us her five favourite restaurant art collections:
I love the whimsical, surrealist, and eccentric approach Sketch has taken. There is no attempt to hold back, and nothing is too off-beat, so David Shrigley’s drawings fit in perfectly here as you make your way through the 2 Michelin fare at the Gallery. Designed by India Mahdavi, the interiors are a perfect palm springs pink for a girly dinner with the ladies. Upstairs, the Library is a 3 Michelin restaurant if you want to enjoy the art at the bars downstairs and head up. The combination of food and art make me incredibly happy, so this is a go-to destination for me!
Boasting one of the largest and most diverse art collections in the world, Soho House displays a variety of small works by artists such as Damien Hirst, Tacita Dean, Oscar Murillo, Tracey Emin and John Baldessari to name a few. Chief Curator Kate Bryan continues the great work of Francesca Gavin in championing both established and emerging artists, the latter being particularly close to my heart.
The Groucho Club - Club Room
The Groucho Club has chosen distinct, powerful and punchy works to establish its presence. I am a massive fan of Miles Aldridge’s retro allure, and his enticing photographs sit alongside Catherine Kurtz paintings highlighting the icons of feminine allure (think red lipstick and heels – ooh la la). Our Chief Art Officer, Camilla Grimaldi has worked closely with Miles and I have had the pleasure of hosting a talk with him, so it is fantastic to see his works in a setting different to the Tate for instance.
The Arts Club is nestled in the epicentre of Mayfair gallery life, and a must for any art lover. I enjoy their art programme and works, so the use of temporary exhibitions in addition to the outstanding permanent collection, including George Condo, John Stezaker and John Baldessari, is a blessing. A striking work as you enter is Tomas Saraceno’s network of perspex biospheres suspended in the stairway which is always a pleasure to walk past when you kick back with a drink.
Thoroughly focussed on art as its name suggests, the approach from Artist Residence is contemporary and cutting edge. I do enjoy Dan Baldwin’s work featured quite prominently with its vibrant colours and forms. Downstairs in the bar, art lends its name to the cocktails - think alcoholic versions of Munch’s ‘The Scream’ and Bloody Mary in Warhol’s soup can. This is a true haven for any art lover. Pictured.
