In an exclusive deal with Karisma Hotels & Resorts, Viacom (owners of Nickelodeon) licensed the brand to the Miami-based developer to develop a collection of hotels that called Nickelodeon Hotels. The properties feature the popular Nickelodeon characters, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
This collaboration marks the first time the kid-friendly Nickelodeon brand has been actually partnered with an international resort collection, with the ambition to “bring fans closer to the Nickelodeon characters they know and love”. Nickelodeon Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is the partnership’s first property, opened in May 2016. A second hotel will open in Mexico “shortly thereafter,” the company has reported. In addition there will be The Nickelodeon Vacation Experience at (selected) Azul Hotels by Karisma, a collection of family-focused, all-inclusive properties in the Riviera Maya, Mexico, and Negril, Jamaica – debuting this summer.
In 2007, Viacom struck a deal with Marriott International and a hotel developer to license the Nickelodeon brand for a similar theme hotel project. But the economic downturn, triggered by the financial crisis in 2008, forced the companies to shelve the plans.
