Oiji

Oiji is sleek and contemporary in both aesthetics and cuisine. The chef duo and co-owners - Bouley and Gramercy Tavern vets - have turned to Korea for inspiration, and concocted a menu of delicate and creative twists on traditional Korean dishes.

Chefs Brian Kim and Tae Kyung Ku are both natives of Seoul, South Korea, and they have succeeded in introducing authentic Korean cuisine to the city, beyond the BiBimBop and barbecue we're accustomed to. The food is frequently surprising and beautifully presented, their Michelin experience shining through in the delicate handling and technique at play. The portions are small, served tapas style, but all the better for trying a selection.

There is an interesting list of traditional Korean spirits such as soju, chung ha and plum wine, or seolijungmae if you want to be technical, which all make an appearance on the cocktail list. The bar program was recently taken over by chef-turned-bartender Ryan Te, who uses his experience from the kitchens of two Michelin starred The Modern to create a drinks menu filled with complexities and balance. The wine list is something to also take a second look at, hand picked and expertly curated, they boast nearly 50 bottles spanning both old world and new world. The space is atmospheric and sleek, with a clean cut design to match the cooking - which happens in the open kitchen at the back of the room. There is also a breezy factory style window at the front, making it ideal for summer dining.

Make sure you finish with a plate of Honey Butter Chips to share. A packaged snack that became a cult classic in Korea, Kim and Ku have made their own version and they're insanely moreish.
