Just Desserts

Since Michelin-starred chef and restauranteur Jason Atherton (Berners Tavern, City Social) launched London’s first ever Dessert Bar at Pollen Street Social a host of new sweet spots are opening up – ensuring that pudding is now the new main course.

The people behind Chin Chin Labs in Camden have opened Chin Chin Club, a Nitrogen ice cream and cake emporium, this time in Soho. The instant ice cream makers are back with “London’s first dessert-only restaurant” and expanded offering including some exciting new signature serves. Watch them create your ice-cream from scratch (the flavours change every month) or order The Choux-wich (a choux ice cream sandwich with Persian Pistachio and olive oil ice cream) and the Avo Taco (a purple corn waffle taco filled with avocado ice cream & topped with house cream & crunchy fried corn).

Nearby is also Basement Sate – a pudding and cocktail bar from Cathleen McGarry (co-owner of the highly regarded Paris cocktail bar Sherry Butt). Occupying premises (formerly home to The Player) on Soho’s Broadwick Street, Basement State serve a changing selection of desserts (by Dorian Picard – formerly of Maze) alongside matching cocktails (by Byly Tran of the Prescription Cocktail Club) and a list of organic wines and craft beers until midnight.

Another recommended place to savour delicious desserts is Yauatcha, the contemporary (and Michelin-starred) dim-sum teahouse and restaurant (also in Soho). Designed by Christian Liaigre as a modern reinterpretation of the old Chinese teahouse, Yauatcha serves up exotic Chinese and Indian teas with incredible handmade desserts (including their acclaimed cakes, chocolates and macarons) served in their stylish ground-floor tea room.

Belgravia choclatier, R Chocolate London, uses multi award winning Original Beans from the earth’s rarest places, providing an array of sweet delicacies including their signature caramel chocolates in a variety of different flavours. They also boast a ‘Memory Lane’ collection which is an interpretation of all the original chocolate bars. Enjoy a selection of afternoon delights (eight tantalising sweet creations, all served with your choice of tea) at their High Tea experience, paired with a glass of Champagne Baron de Rothschild or as a unique alternative, a Chocolate Sparkling Wine.

We are still also eagerly awaiting the rumoured arrival of Les Soufflés, set to be London’s first dedicated soufflé restaurant. Originally slated to open in Knightsbridge’s Beauchamp Place, it is the brainchild of legendary French chef Gérard Idoux and his daughter Estelle Idoux, founders of acclaimed Paris restaurant La Cigale Récamier, which has gained a reputation for making the lightest soufflés in the city.
