Originally a simple chiringuito Juan y Andrea is one of the most talked about restaurants in Formentera. The shack has since spilled out to include several terraces and a bar, and is perfectly poised between the sand dunes and the sparkling turquoise Playa Illetes, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. This (barefoot) chic yet relaxed (family owned) dining spot is acclaimed for their excellent seafood cuisine – fabulous paellas, platters of pescado a la sal and Formentera prawns a la plancha. Make sure U book well in advance.
Beso Beach is a more recent addition – a secluded, shabby-chic beachfront restaurant, on Playa de Cavall d´en Borràs. This secluded oasis (think white washed furniture, all natural décor with eclectic modern design etc.) offers up a super laidback atmosphere with fresh fish dishes and Basque-style meat specialties. Stay well after lunch, when the crowds descend and the music pipes up and the place becomes more of a party setting.
Can Dani is one of the most prestigious restaurants and the first eatery (on the Islas Pitiusas) to be awarded a coveted Michelin star. Located in Formentera’s rural landscape, this San Ferran roadside bistro is contemporary and Mediterranean in feel - with a seasonally influenced ‘roots’ menu, using locally sourced produce (expect healthy aperitivos, locally caught fish and seafood, and the finest cuts of meat). Open all year round.
Set in the island’s capital village of Sant Francesc, restaurant Can Carlos is now regarded as a Formentera institution. With its classic Mediterranean aesthetic, the rustic farmhouse and open-air (plant covered) terrace is the ideal setting for a romantic al-fresco dinner. The menu serves international cuisine with a tendency towards Italian dishes and flavors combined with vegetables gathered straight from the island.
Es Caló, in the little fishing village of the same name is a famed Formentera establishment. This beachside bar and restaurant nestled in the harbor has the most stunning picturesque setting – it's the perfect place to devour fresh paella, seafood platters and grilled fish. Order 'calamares a la bruta’ made with fresh squid and Iberico ham, and fried lobster and crab - served with country eggs.
Don't forget dessert! La Mukkeria is an Italian gelato and yoghurt transplant guaranteed to cool U off after that hot Formentera sun. Flavours include the classics (chocolate, lemon, vanilla) as well as the more unusual (hazelnut, rum and goat's cheese; apple, carrot and lime). Coffee, juice and cakes are also served.
