Currently home to the Jehovah's Witness Watchtower residential complex, the new development could have up to 600 rooms and 60,000 to 100,000 square feet of food-and-beverage offerings. There will be an observatory style restaurant at the type, with views of the Manhattan skyline, which Shrager suggested could be the Brooklyn equivalent of the Rainbow Room.
Public will form part of the Dumbo Heights office and retail project owned by Jared Kushner along with RFR's Aby Rosen and Michael Fuchs. The building is so large, that Schrager has hinted it could encompass more than one type of hotel, potentially with an extended-stay section or an innovation to reclaim the Airbnb market. The building will be handed over to developers in 2017, so watch this space for updates.
Schrager - of Studio 54 fame, whose other hotel credits include the absurdly stylish EDITION line - debuted his new Public hotel collection in Chicago in 2011, and currently has two other Public hotels in the works, one on the Lower East Side and the other on the far West Side.
