The company's first European resort is in the UNESCO-protected World Heritage area of the beautiful Douro Valley in Northern Portugal.
The expansive resort covers 19 acres and features 71 guest rooms, suites, and villas (with one, two and three bedrooms) some overlooking the River Douro (that gives the valley its name). The property is designed to reflect the 19th century architecture typical to the local area with contemporary interiors (with the inimitable Six Senses style) by leading New York-based design studio Clodagh Design (also behind the design of the much anticipated EAST, Miami by Swire Hotels).
The all-day dining and the local-speciality restaurant draws upon the abundant fresh produce of the region and from the resort’s own gardens, which features a contemporary take on classic Portuguese dishes. There is also a Wine Academy where guests may be guided through the varieties and styles from the surrounding valley by local winemakers and dedicated sommeliers.
The extensive spa includes ten treatment rooms with local wine inspired treatments and the Six Senses specialty programs are also apart of the Six Senses Visiting Practitioner Program, which features over 100 of the world's best wellness healers, practitioners and experts. Spa facilities also include a heated indoor pool, a heated outdoor pool (with bar) and a well-equipped gym.
The Six Senses Douro Valley is located just 20 miles from Vila Real Airport and 88 miles from Porto International Airport, making it suitably convenient for weekend retreats. This resort is the 12th property in the group's rapidly expanding portfolio, with resorts in far-flung locations including Zighy Bay (Oman) and Samui (Thailand). Known for its unique approach (purveyors of barefoot luxury), they also have a strong commitment to the local community, sustainability and wellness.
