One-Food Focus

Forget menus as long as your arm, Urbanologie presents the top London restaurants picking one 'foodie focus' and then sticking to it!

The Humble Egg

Bad Egg (in Moorgate) is the brainchild of chef and self-confessed “egg pervert” Neil Rankin, who also runs barbeque restaurants The Smokehouse. Inspired by modern Chicago diners, Rankin hopes to change perceptions about eggs serving up the likes of North African baked eggs, Malaysian egg sambal with galangal, shrimp and chilli, and a reinterpretation of the full English breakfast and the Bad Egg burger served with a runny yolk.

Nearby in The Good Egg (run by Foxcroft & Ginger), the eggs are all cooked using 'sous vide' at exactly 63 degrees for an hour - and served in dishes such as chorizo and chermoula sauce poachede eggs with herb roasted mushrooms and sourdough toast poached eggs with smoked haddock, caramelised parmesan cheese sauce.

Egg Break offers an egg-focused menu comprised of five “dirty” baps and five healthy dishes, including an egg, pork belly, sausage meat and sriracha mayo bap and an egg, bacon and kale bap – along with avocado and eggs on toast and eggs with fried chicken.

Mighty Meatballs

Founded by Australian-born chef Bonny Porter - (a finalist in Australian Masterchef) formerly of The Arts Club and Village East, Balls & Company, is a 50-cover restaurant on Greek Street which serves a choice of five varieties of meatballs - served in Mauviel copper pans, alongside a choice of sliders and side dishes (including mac & cheese and fennel & fontina arancini). The two-floor space has been designed by stage set designers Holly Pigott and Madeleine Girling, and features a ceiling installation inspired by Anish Kapoor.

Hot Dawgs

Bubbledogs is one of the classiest hot dog places in town, situated a few minutes walk from Goodge Street. Expect a glass of bespoke grower champagne with your gourmet dog and with up to 16 to choose from, you'll be needing it. Serving anything from the ‘Breakie’ hot dog (fried egg, tomato relish, crispy bacon & black pudding) to the ‘Trishna’ (mango chutney, spicy coriander and mint sauce and sev), there’ll be more than enough to choose from to satisfy those hot dog cravings. Prices range from £6-£8 so if you're after a dog with a difference then this is your spot.

Top Dog serves up good quality American style hot dogs with an influence on healthier eating. Inspired by the success of the various US burger brands in the capital (Five Guys, Shake Shack) the restaurant promises to have a “US rebel biker culture of the 1950s” and a menu of premium hot dogs, organic ice cream milkshakes, fries (cooked in rapeseed oil) and hand-made relish. You will be able to choose your ‘dog’ from a choice of classic veal and pork, beef or chicken (with veggie options) as well as a choice of bun (from three). There are 9 hotdog choices on the menu including a classic caramelised onion finish, a Chicago Dog, a Kimchi dog and even a pulled pork and apple slaw dog.

Selfish Shellfish (A whole lotta lobster)

The (eat-in or take-out) menu at Fraq's Lobster features a small choice of seafood dishes inspired by the North America's East Coast and Maine's best lobster joints - with a focus on perfectly cooked lobster. The 33 cover operation is on Goodge Street.

Lobster Kitchen (in Fitzrovia) has been designed to emulate the rustic look of an authentic seaside shack with reclaimed wood paneled walls, recycled buoys and lobster traps hanging from the ceiling - bringing New England to Central London. Diners can deck down on one of the distressed wooden sharing tables or high stools. Lobster rolls are the house speciality with varying flavours (including garlic and parsley butter and sweet chilli with a splash of spicy fish sauce) as well as lobster mac n' cheese, lobster tails and shrimp rolls. Sides include pickles, corn and deep fried clams.

A Truffle Kerfuffle

Harrods 'Tartufi & Friends' offers a range of authentic and innovative ways to try the truffle, with the delicacy being a featured ingredient on the menu (diners have the option of adding either fresh black or white truffles), from the starters, desserts and even in the cocktails. All dishes are exclusively made with Tartufi & Friends products and served with fresh truffles such as the indulgent 'Tartufi & Friends Burger' - served with foie gras, sweet onion marmalade, truffle mustard and mayonnaise and fresh truffle. Even desserts benefit from the addition of the prized tuber, such as 'vanilla ice cream with pine nuts, figs and truffle honey'. The lounge also offers truffle products to be purchased separately, including the brand’s limited edition range of extra virgin olive oil with white truffle.

And one for the jet-setting truffle lovers:

Learn to forage at Villa Lena in Tuscany as they are hosting special weekends in celebration of the white truffle with their specialized agriculture team and Lagotto Romagnola dogs. Prepare and cook the truffles with chef in residence Guillaume Rouxel (foermerly of Le Chateaubriand and Le Crillion restaurants in Paris), and of course, enjoy multiple courses and variations of this Tuscan delicacy at special degustation meals. Price: €600 euros per person including the weekend’s gourmet menu and all the activities, excluding accommodation (from €300 for 2 nights) in either the old (converted) stables or in the adjacent 19th century Villa.
