New London Hotel Openings

The spate of trendy new hotel openings this year is set to continue with the announcement of several exciting new upcoming additions and launches.

Recent news has also revealed that American hotelier and trendsetter André Balazs having already brought the Hollywood glitz of his Chateau Marmont to London (with Chiltern Firehouse) is to open his first Standard hotel outside of the US, in London King’s Cross neighbourhood.

Scheduled to open this September (but now slated to open February 2015) is The Zetter Townhouse, Marylebone – a 24-bedroom boutique hotel, housed in an elegant Georgian townhouse and will feature a spectacular signature suite with a roof terrace (on the top floor) and a cocktail bar on the ground floor. Building on their reputation of ‘a small hotel with a big personality’ expect – cutting-edge design, quirky vintage-inspired interiors (by Russell Sage Studios) and individually styled rooms influenced by ‘wicked uncle Seymour’ a fictional character based on the eccentric great aunt Wilhelmina character which helped define the character and design of the original Zetter Townhouse.

The Arts Club on Mayfair’s Dover Street is to add (next spring) 16 beautifully designed hotel rooms and suites to its impressive Mayfair townhouse. The suites, which will be housed on the second, third and fourth floors of the Georgian building, will be elegant and glamorous in design and evoke the style of Europe in the early 20th Century. Alongside displaying art – the large suites will include furnishings from iconic designers in Europe, such as Jacques Adnet, Gio Ponti, Finn Juhl, Piero Fornasetti and Hans Wegner and created by London design specialists Sagrada. Hotel guests will also have access to all the superb facilities, including the three restaurants, terrace and nightclub.

Work has begun on the development in Shoreditch of the first overseas outpost of the New York-based company, the Gansevoort Hotel Group. Due to open at the end of 2015 (or early 2016), the 120-bedroom hotel is described as a “full-service urban resort” and will feature a restaurant, bar, rooftop pool and lounge, 24-hour fitness centre and extensive meeting and event space. Architects Dexter Moren Associates and interior design group Design DMU will "merge (owner Michael) Achenbaum’s high standard for style and service with the edgy, urban vibe of the up-and-coming Tech City area in Shoreditch, paying homage to the district with designs inspired by the local street art scene".

Also currently under construction in Shoreditch and slated to launch in 2016 is the Nobu Hotel Shoreditch - designed to reflect both the city and area of origin as well as Nobu’s signature east-meets-west philosophy. Designed by leading architect Ben Adams Architects and Studio PCH, the five-storey development (will boast an angular glass design, with concrete balconies and steel beams, pictured) on Shoreditch’s Willow Street and will accommodate 156 contemporary-style bedrooms and will feature a signature (triple-height) basement Nobu restaurant (developed by Chef Matsuhisa specifically and uniquely for this hotel). Additionally, the hotel will feature banqueting and meeting rooms, a state-of-the-art fitness center and an intimate landscaped garden.

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts will be transforming the former Port of London Authority headquarters at 10 Trinity Square (near to the Tower of London), into a ‘super luxury’ 100-room hotel and residential development. The private members’ club at Ten Trinity Square (located in the original wood-panelled executive offices of the building), will offer members stylish and exclusive meeting rooms, a business centre, screening room, cigar lounge and access to an exclusive Château Latour room. Opening spring 2016.

Another notable opening we are looking forward to – is the opening of the Grade 1-listed, iconic Admiralty Arch which will be transformed into a luxury 100-room hotel and restaurant, bar and private members’ club (to be located on the top floor). One of London’s most recognizable landmarks, Admiralty Arch was originally built in 1912 by King Edward VII as a memorial to Queen Victoria and most recently been used by the Cabinet Office and now being developed by developer Rafael Serrano. Residential apartments are planned for the first and second floors on the north side of the arch.

The historic (Grade II listed) Bow Street Magistrates’ Court (in Covent Garden) is set to be transformed into a 99-bedroom boutique hotel also scheduled to open next year. The design by Chinese-American architects Neri & Nu will see the building transformed and the original court room will be converted into a signature restaurant (allegedly by Jason Atherton) and four bedrooms (on the first floor) will be created from ten of the existing police cells - previous residents included Italian adventurer Giacomo Casanova, the notorious Kray twins and Oscar Wilde.

Oscar Wilde was also a frequent guest at the historic Cadogan hotel (on Sloane Street) which is currently undergoing a full renovation and will re-open summer 2016, managed by luxury hotel group Belmond (formerly The Orient Express Group). The interior design project will be carried out by the London office of GA Design International drawing inspiration from the beautiful architectural character of The Cadogan and surrounding neighbourhood as well as the hotel’s rich heritage. The refurbishment will include a new destination restaurant.

Another landmark hotel also being renovated is the iconic Lanesborough Hotel (scheduled to re-open March 2015). The current owners Starwood are keeping details firmly under wraps, however the designs are by world renewed interior designer Alberto Pinto (his final project before his death last year). The renovations are set to ‘honour the building’s architectural heritage as one of London’s most revered Regency landmarks, and embodies the signature style that has become synonymous with The Lanesborough’. One of Asia’s most prestigious hotel groups, Peninsula Hotels announced the development of its first location in London (which is set to open on a site just metres away from the Lanesborough) at 1-5 Grosvenor Place. The final development will include both a hotel and a residential element.
