Cafe Altro Paradiso

James Beard nominated duo behind Nolita favourite Estela has expanded into SoHo with a grand space with rustic Italian fare and an epic winelist.

Cafe Altro Paradiso is the new venture from the dynamic duo behind Nolita hotspot Estela, which gathered a James Beard nomination and even pulled in a visit from President Obama. After several years of "medium, vaguely Mediterranean plates meant to go with wine,"  Chef Ignacio Mattos and restaurateur Thomas Carter are going in a slightly different direction.

The space itself is also a departure from their Nolita roots. High ceilings, sweeping expansive windows, and 1930's Italian fixtures give it all an art deco brasserie feel which works perfectly alongside the traditionally inspired rustic Italian cuisine. While most of the dishes have their roots firmly in regional tastes, there are a few Mattos tweaks which instantly feel indicative of New York.

While the marble floors and 75-seater dining room give the feel of grandeur, the food is simpler and less "gimmicky" than at Estela. The menu is very ingredient focused with the dishes changing with the seasons and hopefully expanding to all day long.
