My Perfect Day - Michel Roux Jr

Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr, shares with U his favourite tips and hangouts, giving U an insight into his 'Perfect Day'.

How do you start your day?

If I’m at Le Gavroche that day and I don’t have any early meetings, I’ll get up at 7am and have a double espresso, homemade bread and my mother’s homemade Seville marmalade. I’m a big believer in breakfast, I don’t understand why some people would skip it! I’ll get to the restaurant for 8am and sit down with my Head Chef Rachel Humphrey and make sure everything’s in order. If I don’t have any meetings scheduled, I’ll then be in the kitchen overseeing preparations for the day’s service.

Leisurely lunch go to?

I normally have a quick bite to eat at Le Gavroche ahead of lunch service, so a leisurely lunch is a treat! I live in Clapham and there are some great local restaurants – The Dairy is one of my favourites.

Favourite way to pass the time in London?

I’m an avid runner, so going for a run in Hyde Park on a sunny afternoon is one of my favourite things to do. I try to go in between lunch and dinner service to clear my head and collect my thoughts, but I can’t always rely on the sun!

Favourite London landmark, and why?

Albert Bridge, for its history but also the view. It’s one of my favourite spots to run through, the views are beautiful and the bridge itself is pretty spectacular.

Tipple of choice and favourite cocktail hangout?

I can never say no to a glass of Gosset Celebris, it’s my favourite champagne. My favourite cocktail bar would probably be Artesian at The Langham. It’s been voted World’s Best Bar for four consecutive years, and unsurprisingly, the cocktails are superb.

Favourite dining destinations, and why?

If I’m staying local to home, I like TrinityBistro UnionMay the Fifteenth, and Gastro. They all serve fantastic food, and service always comes with a smile. If it’s an occasion, I like L’Atelier de Joël RobuchonThe Ritz, and Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester. They’re all great examples of high quality French cuisine in London.

Final stop for a nightcap, and why?

Home! I’m on my feet in the kitchen most days so a chance to put my feet up by the log fire with a glass of Balvenie is perfect for me.

Best hangover remedy?

I try not to drink during the week if I can, and even then I’m not really a heavy drinker at the weekends. The last hangover I had was at Christmas, and I remedied that with lots of leftovers. That would probably be my advice, you need feed a hangover. Or perhaps go for a run and sweat it out, but that’s not for everyone!

Where next on your travels?

I’ve recently returned from a Skrei Cod fishing trip in Sommarøy, Norway, which is a really stunning island but very cold! So I might go for a bit of warmth next, perhaps Bird Island in the Seychelles or to our family home in Ardeche over the summer.
