Switzerland may be known for its chocolates but in Paris, chocolate is an art medium from which delicious works of culinary art are produced. With this in mind, we present our top four picks for the best chocolates in the city.
À la Mère de Famille holding the prize as Paris’s oldest chocolatier and still located in 35 Rue du Faubourg, listed on France's official Inventory of Historical Monuments, À la Mère de Famille is a must visit for all chocolate lovers. Founded in 1761 the shop’s wooden counters are piled high with a wide selection of chocolate delicacies. We recommend you buy a tube of Florentines, silvered almonds dipped in caramelised honey and coated in dark chocolate.
Jean-Charles Rochoux looks more like a luxury boutique than a chocolate shop, yet it’s glossy interior of mirrors and glossy oak hosts a treasure trove of chocolates, pralines, bonbons and liqueur filled truffles. Once you have made your selection, the shop masterfully wraps it all up in a metallic silver faux-snakeskin case, making it the perfect gift to bring back home to a loved one.
Debauve et Gallais Not many can boast that they were the sole supplier of chocolates for the French royal family but Debauve et Gallais sure can do so. Since 1818 until 1913 Debauve et Gallais chocolates were reserved solely for the king and his royal court. Indeed, Debauve et Gallais handcrafted chocolates for Kings Louis XVIII, Charles X, and Louis-Philippe, it was only in 1913 that the chocolatier finally began selling to the public. Even today purchases are presented in blue and gold-embossed boxes as they were originally presented to the royals. We recommend you purchase their dark chocolate truffles favoured by King Louis, and still the staple of Debauve et Gallais confectionary.
Henri Le Roux once held the prize as the Best Chocolatier in France. Little wonder, with over 80 different handcrafted creations made from the finest cocoa from Vanuatu, São Tome, Colombia, and Madagascar, Henri Le Roux has a great deal to pride itself on. When visiting the shop we recommend you also buy some salted butter caramels, a delicacy of the shop and one more reason why Le Roux has truly gained renowned status in France.
