Everyone's favorite Italian-style culinary market/school/food hall/circus, Eataly, has finally expanded. Housed in the new Westfield shopping center in the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, this 40,000 square foot venue is the second New York outpost from Italian businessman Oscar Farinetti in partnership with Mario Batali. After months of setbacks, this new location finally opened this week while the rest of the Westfield will be opening later in the year.
Eataly, founded in 2007 in Turin, Italy in a converted Vermouth factory and has now expanded to nearly 28 locations in eight countries and has been praised worldwide for its inventive approach to showing new markets how to eat Italian fluently.
The Westfield shopping center in World Trade Center Transportation Hub will operate at $1.4 billion, with expectations of $700 million to $1 billion retail sales annually, which breaks down to $2,000 to $3,000 per square foot.
