Mr Donahue's is a micro diner from Ann Redding and Matt Danzer who brought you Nolita favourite Uncle Boons. While previously they've been known for their Thai bites, this classic American hangout is loaded with hearty fare reminiscent of older days when roast pork, rotisserie chicken and meatloaf were much more the norms. Based on the old school eating style of a main and three sides, there are no real light meals here, but it's all delicious. While the mains are fairly limited in choice, their side's game is very strong.
Holding only nine seats, this business was meant to be more of a take out HQ than a full-time restaurant. However, the public quickly let Mr Donahue's know they had a hot ticket on their hands. With lots of dark wood, random pictures, and plenty of warm colours, this is a cosy den where wines by the glass are poured from magnums that change often, placemats are made from lace paper, and the vibe is much like a step through time. Named and themed after the owner's grandfather, they've hit the nail on the head.
While Mr Donahue's started with very limited hours, they've extended their service and are now open seven days a week for both lunch and dinner. If you don't want to take the gamble for scoring a seat - they've really nailed take out.
