Although chef Daniel Rose earned his reputation (along with several accolades) in Paris with Spring and La Bourse et La Vie, this is in some ways a homecoming. Originally from Chicago, this is Rose's first American venture and he wisely paired up with Stephen Starr, the restaurateur with a Midas touch. Located inside the 11 Howard Hotel, this upscale eatery is an ode to everything that brought Rose up to this point.
Classically trained in Lyon, France, it comes as no surprise that the menu is filled with old school ingredients like pig's ears, Dover sole, anchovy and chanterelles, all brought together to create something classic, yet relevant to today’s New York world. The menu is decadent and lavish - written predominantly in French - which goes hand in hand with the gorgeous space designed by Roman and Williams. Domed ceilings, landscape murals and marble counters give it a feeling of the old world while small details like the eclectic chandeliers and almost whitewashed exposed brick brings it right up to today.
This place is a showstopper, make no mistake, but it manages to pull it off without feeling pretentious or stuffy. The service is impeccable, naturally, but it's the kind of place that will almost feel like home - a place where you are surrounded with friends and truly outstanding food.
