Bohemian Spirit

Housed below the Czech Embassy, this home-styled cafeteria is full of old world flavors, charm and sensibilities.

As today's food frequently becomes more and more refined and deconstructed, sometimes we crave something a little more rustic and homey, without the fuss and faff. When this happens head to the Upper East Side, where you'll find some of the most authentic Czech cuisine this side of the Atlantic.

Housed beneath the Czech embassy, they've replaced frills with bare tables, walls covered in old black & white pictures, and staff to-the-point staff. Bohemian Spirit is serving up classic old school dishes like beer-roasted sausage, braised beets, dumplings, and chuck roast with gravy. All this is meant to be liberally washed down with massive tankards of Czech Pilsner Urquell and BrouCzech Dark while soaking in the general feeling of another time and place.

The chef, Lukas Pohl, was also the hands behind this site's previous restaurant, Hospoda where they tried to elevate the less than delicate flavors into dishes closer resembling art. This time around they purposely went for nostalgia in every bite making the experience that much richer.
