It's always great to see a family business open, especially a mother-daughter combo who do things a little differently. Taking over a space Ninth Ave, between 48th and 49th streets, they're bringing a touch of southern hospitality to Hell's Kitchen, only with a twist - most of the menu is available gluten-free and/or vegan.
While Linda and Zora Browne are still offering up classics like fried green tomatoes, Southern fried chicken, hush puppies and collard greens - they're swapping the classic flour mixture for a cornmeal batter - safe for all the gluten-free eaters out there. The collard greens - classically stewed in pork - have been prepared sans animal products, but they are more than happy to throw in some bacon if you want (and really why wouldn't you).
The main exception to all their beautifully almost healthy intentions is the mac & cheese, fully charged with wheat filled pasta and real dairy gooey cheese.
