The latest Japanese import to hit the NYC dining scene arrived last Spring with little to no fan-fair, yet they have been quietly building a following worthy of any block long line. Founded in the '70's in Kumamoto (yes, like the Oyster), they enjoyed much success in their native seaside local as well as in Hong Kong, with their Greenwich Village location pushing their numbers into the double digits.
Hovering somewhere about super cheap discount sushi which makes you feel like you're rolling the dice every time, but not quite hitting the elite omakase-only world of long-winded, although delicious, meals, Mi-Ne serves simple, tasty and still beautifully presented Japanese meals. Covering a massive selection of fresh-as-can-be sushi, a multi-course omakase which runs around $55 which will more than satisfy, plus a massive selection of regional specific Japanese dishes, their menu hits nearly 200 items for your eating pleasure. Not great for those who struggle to make decisions, but plenty for the eyes to get started with.
While the menu is eclectic and filled with new things, the actual feel of the restaurant sticks to the classic with clean lines, traditional service, and plenty of white details. This is really a great example of the buying power of a chain without feeling overused and tired. Expect more NYC locations to come.
Getting that sushi fix and trying new things.
The sushi omakase is pretty stellar, but be sure to check out the massive Tuna Collar if you come in with a group.
