One of my all time favourite foods is dim sum. It was proving incredibly difficult to find good dim sum in Cape Town until I stumbled across this little hole in the wall establishment at the top of Long Street. The menu is short, simple and everything on it is perfection. Each little parcel has perfectly thin, delicate pastry, the filling are all freshly prepared there in front of you. The har gow and beef potstickers are some of the best I have eaten in the World, not just Cape Town.
Located under the pedestrian fan-walk bridge in the Waterkant area, it is an unlikely location for such a special palace. Hemelhuijs (heavenly house) has two important parts – Chef/designer Jacques Erasmus’ love of modern, rich and interesting design, and his love of Afrikaner food. He is constantly reinventing the style of the interior and the menu. This makes it a very popular choice for a weekday lunch or Saturday brunch. The food served here is incredible and creative. Tempura tuna is a favourite alongside a veal dish sliced thin and served with parmesan, lemon and rocket. The drinks are interesting too. A must.
