The Empire States Building is one of the best and worst things about New York. On one hand, it's a legendary shape in our history and skyline with a truly awe-inspiring view at the top, but on the other hand, it draws in hoards of tourists who make the experience - and entire neighborhood - a bit of a nightmare to deal with.
Fortunately, there is a special time that this jaw-dropping sight can be witnessed with only a very limited amount of people: Sunrise. Most people are either blissfully still in bed or occasionally still out enjoying the city, so you can watch as the sun casts its first rays of the day with only a hundred people around to barely jostle for space. Tickets cost $100 each, but for an additional $25 you can stay and have breakfast afterwards in their lobby restaurant which includes cinnamon brioche French toast and their morning wrap with egg whites, avocado, and feta cheese.
Dawn is a very special time in any normally busy city. There is a certain stillness left in the absence of people, a calm before the day really sets in and to watch it all come to life from 102nd floor is something you'll never forget.
