London's New Food Markets

Vibrant multifaceted street market venues and urban food halls are on the rise in London, offering diners numerous and diverse grazing opportunities whilst showcasing a variety of local food vendors and artisans and these are the ones to put on your list...

Eataly

Italian upmarket food chain Eataly is rumoured to have plans to open its first London food hall (slated to open late 2017) in a joint venture with Selfridges. Eataly, the international Italian food emporium that blurs the line between supermarket and restaurant offers much more than just an on-site bakery. Each outpost comprises a mixture of market-style shopping, counter dining and traditional restaurants. Expect to find everything from an upmarket grocery store, a microbrewery, several restaurants (super star chef Massimo Bottura even has a restaurant inside Eataly Istanbul), a Nutella bar and even a cooking school. The original Eataly opened in 2007 when Italian businessman Oscar Farinetti converted a closed vermouth factory, in Turin – which The New York Times described as megastore that "combines elements of a bustling European open market, a Whole-Foods-style supermarket, a high-end food court and a New Age learning center".

Mercato Metropolitano

Already making its mark on London and set for further expansion, is this wide-reaching social project and urban farmers' market. Mercato Metropolitano was originally set up in Milan and following this success has led to expand with another outpost in Turin and then to the UK, where a 45,000sqft site opened recently in a once-disused South London paper factory between Borough and Elephant & Castle. The outpost brings a taste of Italy to the UK capital – including "the best pizza maker from Naples" alongside award-winning artisanal producers from London and beyond as well as Prezzemolo e Vitale, a supermarket originally based in Palermo that specialises in southern-Italian delicacies. The site also contains a cookery school, vegetable garden and in-house cinema.

London Time Out Market

Time Out group is preparing to open a major food and drink market in a Victorian stable, in Shoreditch. The London Time Out Market is to open in 2017 at 106 Commercial Street in Shoreditch, just minutes from the popular Spitalfields market, in a bid to replicate the success of its first venture, which launched in Lisbon in 2014. At 19,250 sq ft the Shoreditch site will be able to hold seating for 450 people, surrounded by 17 food stalls, four bars and a cooking academy. The market will also include a permanent shop and an art gallery which is expected to tap the local creative talent for which Shoreditch has become known. The company also has plans to open further markets in New York and Miami.

The Kitty Hawk

The first of a group of seven new "department stores of dining" is opening in London at River Plate House in South Place, part of a multi-million pound development. The Kitty Hawk aims to cater to all of the needs of the city's food lovers, day and night and all under one roof - and looks to 'celebrate provenance and the artisanal spirit'. Departments include a bar and kitchen area for all day drinking and dining from 7am to midnight, a grill restaurant, cocktail bar, private dining room and a speciality coffee bar and patisserie, that will evolve at night into a wine bar for private hire. Interiors, of this all-day haven, have been designed by Russell Sage with inspiration taken from the City of London's heritage and New York city glamour. The result is a mix of exposed timber and concrete, blackened steel, copper, marble and hand-stitched leather seating.
