Taberna 97

Featuring delicious small plates perfect for sharing, this traditional Portuguese spot on St. Mark's is ideal for a group.

The people that brought U the Irish Pub St. Dymphna's on East Village classic St. Mark's are behind this traditional Portuguese restaurant in the former Yaffa Cafe space. Light and easy, filled with bright and flavorsome food, this is a great pitstop on a street that sometimes seems filled with pizza slices, bubble tea and questionable tattoo parlours.

While U can find larger dishes like Piri Piri-marinated chicken, and grilled sardines with roasted peppers, the real treat on the menu, is their selection petiscos (aka Portuguese small plates) which range in style, flavour and price.  Grab a couple friends and get ordering dishes like littleneck clams with garlic bread and white wine, firewater grilled sausages, cod fritters with aioli and more.

The dining room is clean and slightly kitschy, with exposed brick and wooden beams, tiled floor and bird decorations running along the wall. While Yaffa Cafe was known for its (illegal) backyard, Taberna 97 has this space as a decoration area, only viewable through a glass door.
