Located in the heart of Clapham Old town and next to the infamous Robin Gill's The Dairy lies Counter Culture - described as the 'naughty little brother'. This small BYOB off-shoot (with just 15 seats) uses local produce for a modern British take on Spanish pintxos-style snacking in a Basque country style setting. The regularly changing (and inventive) menu using only fresh, sustainably sourced ingredients with lots of pickling, fermenting and curing techniques (there's even beehives on the roof) to great effect and virtually nothing goes to waste. They do have an alcohol licence but diners are welcome to BYO, with a corkage charge of £10 per bottle.
Converted from the old school bike shed and opened in 2006, Rochelle Canteen looks out onto the grassy playground and the trees of Arnold Circus beyond. This well hidden, daytime gem (open for weekday breakfasts and lunches only) is co-owned by Margot Henderson, wife of Fergus Henderson of St. John, and has a similar culinary approach. The menu changes seasonally with ingredients left mostly to speak to themselves. The laid-back atmosphere and charming setting make for pleasurable mealtimes. Whenever it’s warm enough, tables are set outside for a peaceful sit in the sun. Unlicensed, you can bring your own wine with a corkage charge of £6.50.
The concept speakeasy bar with a twist. B.Y.O.C is a group of cocktail bars that doesn’t serve alcohol, but instead asks you to bring your own spirit of choice along, where an expert mixologist then creates bespoke drinks, all to your taste. The interactive drinking experience allows you to tailor your night exactly to your taste - just simply bring a bottle of your favourite spirit to one of their venues (Camden, Soho and East London), take a seat and enjoy a unique range of cocktails selected and designed just for you. Cheers.
Celebrated English chef Mark Hix’s first solo restaurant, HIX Oyster and Chop House, was opened in 2008, a stones throw from Smithfield, London’s historic meat market. The wooden floors, marble oyster bar, tiled walls and linen tablecloths go towards creating an elegant, yet unfussy dining room. The authentica menu reflects Mark's signature British style with seasonal and daily changing dishes featuring oysters from around the British Isles and a selection of meats and steaks on the bone. Every Monday you are invited to bring your own wine and they won't even charge you corkage. Other recommended places offering BYOB on Mondays include the branches of Hawksmoor with their 'Monday Wine Club' offering £5 corkage all day.
A co-operatively run, vegetarian and vegan restaurant in the Bonnington Square Community Centre in Vauxhall. One of South London's best-kept secrets, tucked amidst the community gardens of the square. The Café has been open since the early 80's when it was started as a communal squat Café to provide a good cheap meal for the community. The style of food changes each day depending on which volunteer chef is actually behind the stoves and the ramshackle interior makes for a homely and rather bohemian vibe. It's an unlicensed premises so remember to bring a bottle with you and they don't charge corkage.
Boozy nights
