Dean and Maya Jankelowitz, who started Jack’s Wife Freda on Lafayette Street in SoHo in January 2012, named the restaurant after Dean’s grandparents, and drew on their own heritage for the menu – they emigrated from South Africa and Israel respectively. The couple serve matzo-ball soup, peri-peri chicken and other spins on traditional Jewish treats to New Yorkers craving gourmet comfort food. Now, the team has opened a second spot, on Carmine Street in the West Village.
Along with their countries of birth, the Jankelowitzs also draw on their high-end New York restaurant experience; they met while working together at Balthazar. The new location stays true to the original concept, will a buzzing atmosphere (particularly at the fash-pack-heavy brunch) and homely food, but will be a much larger space, and introduces some new dishes, such as lamb tartare.
