Tonchin

With winter just around the corner, the New York debut of this Japanese ramen restaurant, focused on tonkotsu ramen, is perfectly timed.

Brought to U by Toui and Anan Sugeno, this is the pair’s first US outpost of their family’s tonkotsu ramen, which first opened in Tokyo in 1992. Tonchin serves an assortment of Tokyo-style ramens in 16 locations across Japan, Taiwan and Shanghai, and the Sugeno family own and operate another 70+ restaurants throughout Asia.

What makes Tonchin different from the crowd of ramen restaurants is its dekitate fare – meaning that everything on the menu is prepared fresh and in-house. U choose from four options, including their Tonkotsu Berkshire pork and more unusual ‘Uoton’ smoked dashi ramen with clams and dashi broth. There’s also a seafood-focused selection if appetizer, as well as rice bowls, or smaller plates such as Tonchin spicy wings and pork ginger gyoza.

Located a stone’s throw from Herald Square, Tonchin is a 60-seat restaurant combines Japanese comfort and style, with a contemporary interior that is both colorful and contemporary.
