Eleven Madison Park named Best Restaurant in North America

Eleven Madison Park has been named the Best Restaurant in North America by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

However, the NYC restaurant, run by dynamic duo Daniel Humm and Will Guidara, lost the number one spot it had gained last year, dropping three places to number four on the overall list. Speaking to Urbanologie at the event, Humm admitted he was disappointed that Eleven Madison Park had failed to retain the title of best restaurant in the world this year. “But we will be back,” he insisted.

Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, gained the title of Best Restaurant in the World, which it had previously won in 2016. Bottura, whose cuisine is both creative and artistic, was celebrated for being a "poet, storyteller and artist as much as a cook".

Meanwhile former winners El Celler den Can Roca in Spain, placed second, with Mirazur in France coming third, making the top three restaurants exclusively European.

Other New York restaurants on the World's 50 Best Restaurants included Dan Barber’s Blue Hill at Stonebarn, which came in 12th place, with Barber also winning the Chef's Choice Award, voted for by his peers around the world. Barber is a chef, who has used his celebrity status as a platform to promote change. Not only has he spoken out against food waste and failings in the agricultural system, he has also taken positive action towards a healthier planet and a better culture for producing and consuming food.

Elsewhere Eric Ripert’s Le Bernadin, the exquisite seafood restaurant, placed 26th. Le Bernardin offers several tasting menu options. The classic four-course menu is split into three sections – Almost Raw, Barely Touched and Lightly Cooked – with dishes marrying French and global influences, especially those from Asia.

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards ceremony was held in Bilbao, Spain this year. The three-day event included talks by some of the world’s most celebrated chefs, including Bottura, Dan Barber and Christina Tosi of NYC's Milk Bar.

Other major awards included the World's Best Female Chef Award, which went to British chef Clare Smyth; the World's Best Pastry Chef, awarded to Cédric Grolet, the head pastry chef of Le Meurice hotel in Paris; the Art of Hospitality Award, which was given to Geranium in Copenhagen, Denmark; the Sustainable Restaurant award, which went to Azurmendi in Bilbao, Spain; and the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was given to Gaston Acurio, the godfather of modern Peruvian cuisine.
