Three Newly Renovated Historic Hotels

These newly renovated hotels celebrate Los Angeles' glorious past.

Hotel Figueroa
Opened in 1926 as an exclusive women's hostel by the YWCA, Hotel Figueroa has been restored to its original Spanish Colonial splendor by Santa Monica-based design agency Studio Collective. A lobby art gallery featuring a newly acquired permanent collection of all female artists is a nod to the hotel’s historic past. There are two restaurants, Breva and Veranda, both led by local chef Casey Lane, formerly of Abbott Kinney hotspot Tasting Kitchen, while the bar program is overseen by Dushan Zaric behind bi-coastal speakeasy group Employees Only.

The Mayfair
This prohibition-era hotel was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River when it first opened in 1926, the ballroom was the site of the first Oscar afterparty in 1929. Located in the Westlake section of downtown Los Angeles, The Mayfair has recently been brought back to its former glory by L.A.-based Icelandic architect and interior designer Gulla Jónsdóttir. The original flooring, brass fixtures, and fluted column pillars have all been restored. New additions include the Library bar; the Eve American Bistro, headed up by Hell’s Kitchen winner Scott Commings; and the first LA outpost of Chicago’s cult Fairgrounds Coffee and Tea Bar.

Villa Carlotta
This former apartment building in the heart of Hollywood's Franklin Village was also completed in 1926. It was the project of one of the first major Hollywood studio heads, Thomas Ince and his wife Eleanor, and designed by Arthur E. Harvey. Hollywood greats such as David O. Selznick, Marion Davies and Montgomery Clift resided at the property, which has now been transformed into an extended stay “residential hotel.” Ranging from studios to two bedrooms, each of the 50 units is different and almost all original features such as moldings, sinks, doors and windows have been preserved. There’s a 24-hour concierge and a roof terrace with uninterrupted views of Hollywood.
