Luca's Italy

To coincide with his Italian Riviera inspired collection, Luca Faloni, founder of the luxury online menswear label, shares with U his must-visit Italian haunts…

Del Cambio, Torino

Renowned as the emblem of culture in Turin, its halls have witnessed the comings and goings of the men and women who made the history of Italy and beyond. Del Cambio is located in front of the first Italian parliament in Italy’s original capital and was once the dining spot of choice for the country’s civil servants. Italian statesman Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour, after declaring war on Austria famously pronounced “Today we made history, now let’s go for dinner”, proceeding to lead the house to Del Cambios. The restaurant now serves high-end Piemontese cuisine and has attracted many distinguished guests including Audrey Hepburn. Pictured.

Porto di Savona, Torino

Porto di Savona is a rustic trattoria serving some of the best Piemontese food, ranging from Truffle Tagliatelle to Vitel Tonnato. Located in the Turin’s main square with fantastic views of the cities central hill, it’s a perfect spot to enjoy an evening and watch the city go from day to night. Diners can sit outside and look to the beautiful baroque buildings along the huge Piazza Vittorio Veneto up to the bridge, which goes over the river Po.

La Latteria, Milan

I spend many days a year in Milan visiting nearby manufacturers and almost always eat here. It is a place steeped in history, still run by the same family that started it many moons ago. A place loved by the locals, with only ten tables and no possibility to book in advance. Serving typical Milanese food in a very authentic family kitchen style way. The interior is simple and homely; framed press flowers, simple tables & chairs with white cloths and an old brass ceiling lamp. One of those rare places that survives generations, due to the food being so delicious.

Grotta Palazzese, Puglia

A magical and enchanted terrace created inside a natural cave and in my eyes it is one of the most romantic restaurants in Italy, Grotta Palazzese restaurant takes its name from the homonymous cave and from the location once called "Grotta di Palazzo". Since 1700, travellers coming from Europe to Southern Italy stopped at this fascinating place and reported its beauty in their chronicles. The charm of the location remains the same although it now has a touch of modernity, which makes the Grotta Palazzese restaurant even more welcoming. All aspects of the menu are considered with the maximum attention to quality and presentation. Dishes are based largely on foods belonging to the Apulian culinary tradition, with addition of aromas, spices and fragrances for a greater flavour. Guests can enjoy fine Italian wines whilst enjoying the sunset over the ocean.

Harry’s Bar, Venice

A famous Venetian watering hole launched by luxury restaurateurs, the Cipriani family. Since 1929 Harry’s Bar has offered the very essence of the cafe society, being a popular watering hole and elegant eatery for writers, artists, celebrities and aristocrats. For cocktail enthusiasts it is also a must being the founding home of the Bellini. Giuseppe Cipriani named the drink the Bellini because its unique pink colour reminded him of the toga of a saint in a painting. The bar is loved so much by the locals that in 2001, the Italian Ministry for Cultural Affairs declared it a national landmark.
