Local Favourites in Tulum

Urbanologist and local real estate expert, Franck Robert, shares with U his favourite local eateries in and around Tulum.

Encanto Cantina

Located on Av. Tulum, far from the hotel zone, this place is a favourite with locals, and its menu is full of authentic flavours of the Mexican Pacific and the Bajío highlands. Try the fried shredded pork tacos with a tuna ceviche topping, barbacoa tacos with a side of broth, and the flash fried octopus with glazed pineapple.

Unico

Located on the main strip, Unico has a wide variety of food on the menu, including burgers, empanadas and pasta dishes. Some of their most popular items include rib-eye steak, tuna, fried goat cheese and pappardelle. Their highly acclaimed signature eight-course menu has made them very popular. For dessert, we recommend their chocolate lava cake.

Mi Amor

This restaurant is located in a modern boutique hotel and its restaurant serves food that is made with fresh ingredients. They have grilled fish made with a blend of almonds, grapes and lemon and oysters, barracha, and ceviche. They also have a good selection of cocktails and a wine list of Mexican wines from the Guadeloupe valley. We recommend their chocolate dessert with passion fruit sorbet. Pictured.

La Zebra

The food served at La Zebra’s restaurant is almost entirely local. From the fresh-caught fish to the herbs from the organic garden, the menu is filled with dishes that exemplify contemporary Mexican cuisine. The restaurant is situated under a wide palapa roof and the tables are colourful and hand painted. Ceviche, shrimp and octopus tacos, and fish pastor are among the dishes that you can order here. Try the New York steak with chocolate and chilli sauce. They also have a pool and a relaxing sitting area above the restaurant.

El Pescador

This restaurant is located in Tulum’s hotel zone in a relaxing, open-air environment. The laid-back surroundings significantly add to the atmosphere of the dining experience. The menu is a mixture of Caribbean flavours and those of the Mediterranean, made from local ingredients. Among the dishes that you will find here are grilled octopus, sautéed asparagus and squid-ink risotto. For dessert try their Mayan Pearls, a chia ice cream made with tapioca, fruit and liqueur.
