Fast Food Invasion

Discover the latest US fast-food chains looking to take on the UK market.

With chains such as Shake Shack, Five Guys, and the US newcomers Fatburger and Smashburger taking on the UK market we round-up all the latest fast-food outlets vying for your attention.

Eggslut

LA's ‘chef driven, gourmet food concept’ celebrating the humble egg is looking to crack the London market. The ovo-centric menu takes classic comfort food and gives it a modern twist, including sandwiches on house-made brioche buns, burgers and salads. With a menu inspired by a passion for eggs meaning eggs is no longer just a breakfast staple. Eggslut opened its flagship location (as a food truck) in 2013, inside the Grand Central Market in Los Angeles, to both customer and critical acclaim. In 2014, Eggslut was named one of the top ten new US restaurants by Bon Appétit and now has six locations in the United States and an outpost in Beirut.

Halal Guys

Another US import is The Halal Guys. From its humble beginnings as a food cart on the streets of New York City to a global icon, The Halal Guys is nothing short of a phenomenon. March 2019 sees The Halal Guys land in the West End’s Leicester Square followed by two more locations in London in 2019. The Halal Guys menu takes a simple stance. Choose from a sandwich or platter in four equally tasty versions - chicken, beef, chicken & beef or vegan-friendly falafel - served with a selection of toppings and, of course, the iconic, secret recipe white and hot sauces. Since 2015, the operators have gone from one to 450 sites making it one of the fastest growing chains in the world.

Wingstop

The company, which serves fried chicken wings as its “central dish”, originated in Texas in 1994 and has since established more than 1,200 outlets across the States, central America, the Middle East and Asia. Customers are able to order online and enjoy freshly cooked hot chicken wings - served with a range of 11 “signature” sauces. The aviation-themed store also offers takeaways, a selection of locally sourced craft beers and soft drinks, all averagely priced. Their first outpost is now open on Shaftesbury Avenue.

Taco Bell

Taco Bell, owned by New York-listed Yum! is planning an ambitious expansion of Taco Bell across London - two decades since the London restaurants closed spurred on by the success of Chipotle Mexican Grill. The restaurants look similar to Taco Bell’s U.S. counterparts: open-kitchen concepts, artwork from local artists, modern interior designs. The menu includes both Taco Bell’s US staples and a few UK - specific additions - from tacos and burritos to nachos and popular dishes such as the Crunchwrap Supreme – a tortilla stuffed with either beef, chicken or refried beans, served in a tostada shell. Founded in 1962 in California, the American chain is named after founder Glen Bell and presently has more than 7,000 restaurants internationally. Locations in London include: Hammersmith, Fulham and Holborn.
