Violet

A grilled pizza and seafood restaurant has opened in Alphabet City from the team behind Emily and Emmy Squared.

After making Detroit’s pan pies popular in Brooklyn and on the Upper West Side, chef Matt Hyland is now introducing U to the flavors of Rode Island’s famous Al Forno, where grilled pizza was first put on the map, and where Hyland and his wife Emily had their first date.

Grilled pizzas are grilled on both sides and served with scissors for cutting. The seasonal menu offers vegetable-driven toppings such as broccoli with pistachio pesto or squash with Sichuan oil, chèvre and thyme. Besides the pizza, there are also shareable plates of grilled seafood such as grilled shrimp with Calabrian Sichuan butter, “fish & chicks” (cod and kale pakoras with panelle chips), and house-made pastas such as clam spaghetti.

Offering a mix of bar and table seating along with an interactive four-seat chef’s counter, Violet is a new East Village favorite.
