Gitano Jungle Room NYC

After making waves as a sunny summer pop-up, the Tulum-inspired restaurant and bar has settled in a permanent home inside The James Hotel in Soho.

Inspired by and imported from the popular beach town in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, the Gitano Jungle Room is spread over two floors inside the hotel. Flanked by signature lush, tropical plants, the Gitano pink and gray; the design is paired back and minimal, colonial and opulent, creating nothing short of an oasis.

Chef Mads Refslund (formerly of ACME) and Yvan Lemoine (Bodega Negra) have teamed up to bring U a menu of Mexican and Mayan-inspired dishes. The menu is divided into five categories (snacks, small plates, large plates, sides, and desserts), but everything is for the table and recommended to be shared. There’s a tuna tostada with avocado, radish and sesame; or honey-glazed lamb ribs with coriander and lime among the small plates. Large plates feature “pot-roasted” cauliflower (a full head of cauliflower covered with black garlic mole, sitting on top of a cauliflower cream purée) and brook trout cooked in banana leaf. End the meal with mini churros con chocolate and head upstairs for cocktails with a view.

Created by co-founder and head bartender Jeremy Strawn, the cocktail list comprises a host of tropical beverages with an emphasis on Mexican spirits and seasonal ingredients. Don’t miss the signature The Garden Rose, made with rosé tequila, St. Germain, lemon, strawberry, and rose water.

There’s no need to fly to Mexico to experience the spirit of Tulum. It’s right here in Soho.
