London's Best Delis

Urbanologist and foodie Ruby Bell shares with U her favourite food shops and delis.

London is a hotbed for specialist food shops, selling everything from fresh British fruit and veg to beautifully presented charcuterie and fine cheeses from across Europe. We’ve asked Ruby Bell, founder of food delivery service “ByRuby”, to round up her favourites. Being an expert on finding delicious foods for her own homemade meals, here Ruby picks her top 5 gourmet delis in London…

Eat 17 in Hammersmith

This place is great for essentials on the way home. It is filled with some of the best foodie offerings around. It is brimming with artisanal produce from local suppliers including Portobello Brewery, London Cru Wines and So Choux macarons from just up the road. They also have their own home range of products made in-store and boasts a selection of bread, pastries, salads, sandwiches and more! They also make delicious pizzas so if it's been a long day this is the perfect stop off for a quick and tasty supper.

Bayley & Sage

This is a gorgeous deli that has several stores across South West London and takes pride in delivering superb quality, knowledge and provenance across all of their 6 locations. I can’t resist their fantastic British produced cheese & charcuterie which is always beautifully presented. It makes the perfect grab and go if friends are coming over for a glass or two of wine - the cheese biscuits are addictive!

Andreas

Andreas has always had the most beautiful seasonal produce. He sources all of it from the UK and abroad and finds the best fruit and vegetables around. He has a firm following of foodie friends including Nigella Lawson, Gizzie Erskine and Gordon Ramsey who sing his praises. It’s a fabulous place if you’re looking to find those extra special ingredients like truffles - he’s got the best in town.

Lina Stores

This is an iconic Italian Delicatessen and now Pasta restaurant in Soho. Established in 1944 this place has tons of character and aims to offer customers the very best that Italy has to offer from fresh pasta, cured meats, cheeses and anti-pasta. The name Lina was taken from the original founder, a lady called “Lina” from Genova. There are always such friendly & knowledgeable staff behind the counter which makes a real difference. Their fresh pasta is to die for and I’m a big fan of their Salumi selection.

Finns of Chelsea

Opened in 1984 Finns is a great British deli, one of the first established in London. Almost everything is made on site with the best ingredients.  Pop in for a last-minute dinner for 2 or organise your canape party with the friendly staff. Run by two fantastic women, you can really feel the love and care that goes into everything they do. The food is traditional English but with a modern twist and is a testament to the area, all the locals are regulars.
