Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar

Tanoshi may look like a hole-in-the-wall, run-down sushi joint, but it's far from it.

Toshio Oguma previously worked at Morimoto in New York and in Napa County. Here, at his own spot, he has kept things simple with a ten-seater restaurant serving only sushi. Unlike the other notable sushi restaurants in New York, the bill won't leave you wincing at a modest $70 for about 10 pieces of sushi and two rolls on the chef's selection, though more is available to order a-la-carte.

It doesn't look the part either; the neon 'Open' sign in the window, the ceramic cat, and the clutter might put you off - but persevere. Previously, the only way to get a reservation was to physically go to the restaurant - it's in Yorkville - but luckily, they've modernised and you can book a seat at one of their three nightly seatings via their website. With two rooms, each of the chefs - personally trained by Toshio - serve just four persons per round, allowing a serious focus to each diner.
