Bodega Negra

Beneath the Dream Downtown hotel, the dark, clubby Bodega Negra is a sister restaurant to London’s outpost of the same name.

Set up by the TAO group (TAO, Lavo, Marquee) and Serge Becker – proprietor of that other fashionable Mexican spot, La Esquina – with his UK partners Will Ricker and Ed Spencer Churchill, the restaurant has exceptional pedigree.

There’s an extensive, tequila and mezcal-heavy, cocktail menu – the house special, the Bodega margarita – is also available by the pitcher; and the 20z shots of speciality tequila are served with a sangria chaser. It’s little wonder the atmosphere can get rather rowdy. The food is fresh and zesty Mexican (not cheese-smothered ‘Tex Mex’) with ceviches, salads, tacos and platos (large plates, including banana leaf roasted snapper and broiled lobster). For large groups, there’s a set menu available, with seemingly endless sharing courses which showcase the menu and include an entirely unnecessary – but delicious – dessert course.
