This classic and charming tavern - found on a steep, cobbled street running up from the River Tagus and the bars of the Bairro Alto - churns out traditional dishes using fresh ingredients and lcally sourced produce -prepared in a variety of traditional and contemporary methods. There's a daily-changing menu chalked up daily - of creative small plates. Highlights include the mackerel tartare, seasonal gazpacho, local cheese platters, preserved sardines on toast, and fresh whole shrimp.
The decor is simple - whitewashed walls and marble-topped wood tables and azulejo-tiled floor - giving a sense of the atmosphere and cooking of the simple taverns that were once ubiquitous in working class districts. Revered Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes comments, "one of my favourite places in Lisbon, it's a nice Taberna but with really incredible food. Super casual but really nice typical experience. Cool area as well so worth walking down the street and see other things." Please note that the Taberna does not take reservations - so expect to queue with glass in hand. Cash only. No reservations.
Tavern fare
Stewed veal liver, clams steamed with chouriço sausage, and salt cod with chick peas.
