Karasu

Hidden inside Fort Greene standard Walter's, this is neighborhood Japanese eats and top notch cocktails like you never expected.

To get to Karasu, you're actually going to go to Walter's in Fort Greene first. While Walters is fantastic in its own right, keep your eye on the prize and head straight to the back of the restaurants, past the restrooms and to a fake wall/door, behind which you will find another world completely. Welcome to Karasu, a dark, sultry and totally unpretentious Japanese restaurant that is pretty much perfect.

While there are some sushi-like dishes on their regularly changing menu, this is not a sushi restaurant. Having learned her craft at ShukoYael Peet (who recently was listed in Zagats 30 under 30) in in charge of all the delicious things coming out of their micro-kitchen with dishes like a miso potato salad, Karaage duck wings, with spicy sesame, and scallions, and the dry aged prime ribeye Koji with a Tosazu Sauce. They keep the menu small and concise, but the flavors are all stunning.

On the drinks front, expect libations from the mixology mastermind of Thomas Waugh, who was in charge of drinkable things over at ZZ's Clam Bar and Dirty French. The list covers all palettes while constantly keeping you on your toes with unusual combinations like the Smoked Palomino with mezcal, sherry, grapefruit, and salt or the Wave with gin, coconut, grapefruit, and the secret Don’s Mix.
