Main Museum

The Main Museum – set to open in 2020 – will continue Downtown’s art revolution highlighting works from the city of Los Angeles.

It will be located in the Old Bank District on the ground floors of the Hellman Building and the Farmers and Merchants Building. Helmed by Allison Agsten, who previously served as the curator of public engagement at the Hammer Museum, the curatorial focus will be resolutely local.

Featuring 40,000 square feet of exhibition space, including a rooftop sculpture garden, the $55m construction will be overseen by L.A. architect Tom Wiscombe, who describes the new project as a “a three-dimensional space” where “objects penetrate through floors, peek over rooftops, and inhabit dark interior voids.”

At the end of October, the museum is launching “Beta Main,” a series of informal public programs to take place in some of the completed storefront spaces. This kicks off October 30th with a 10-day event staged by Los Angeles artists Suzanne Lacy and Andrea Bowers — two figures known for their socially minded pieces.
