Poons

Sorely missed, iconic Cantonese restaurant chain is making a return to London in the form of a three-month pop-up in Clerkenwell.

Amy Poon (daughter of the original owner) is opening a new Poon’s drawing on her family heritage to bring delicious authentic Chinese food to London again, this time as a pop-up in Clerkenwell - showcasing delicious authentic Chinese food.

The restaurant chain, first opened in the 1960's and consisted of five branches at its peak, each branch with its own speciality and run by different family members. Chef and founder William Poon personally ran the kitchen in Covent Garden which was awarded a Michelin star in 1979.

Some of their signature dishes have been re-worked into more contemporary dishes including their signature “wind-dried” meats that a 1996 Evening Standard article referred to as “Poons’ unique selling point... best sampled in a hot pot with rice''  - as well as a spicy aubergine salad; Hainanese chicken; and steamed fish Guangzhou-style and a range - features alongside a modernised selection of of vegan and gluten-free dishes on the menu. The Poons pop-up opens on 17th February, and is set to precede the opening of a permanent Poons location later this year.
