A Japanese restaurant with a monorail service system said to be the first of its kind in Europe has pulled into Shoreditch. Chuo serves 40 different types of 'quick value quality’ sushi and izakaya-style dishes made to order and delivered by a monorail from the kitchen – unlike the more familiar conveyor-belt counters - with both counter-style seating and group booths. Alongside sashimi, nigiri and more, you'll find various tempura and yakitori dishes. The signature rolls include the Green Dragon with ebi, avocado, cucumber and spicy mayo and the beef roll with carrot, cucumber, red pepper, rocket, takuan and teriyaki sauce.
Hidden downstairs and through the prep kitchen of Covent Garden's Mason Bab is Kebab Queen and a chef's table with a difference. Leading guests through the dishes from the open kitchen, the chefs encourage an uninhibited approach to dining. The six-course tasting menu (of European-influenced kebas), which you can rip, tear and eat with your hands - in a ritual that pays homage to late-night kebabs. Each dish is served directly onto a bespoke, heated Dekton countertop with you sit around the kitchen, perched on one of ten luxurious, cobalt blue, leather-clad stools. Typical dishes include Dover sole kebab served on an ironed hispi cabbage taco with roasted red pepper purée, and a spit-roast Cag kebab of aged Dalesbred mutton with puffed pita, charred heritage tomato ragù, smoked Turkish yoghurt, charred Carlston pepper, shallot and sumac salad.
Dans Le Noir, on London's Clerkenwell Green, is the London outpost of a Parisian concept, which invites diners to eat in a blacked-out room. Part sensory experience and part social experiment - studies show that 80 percent of people eat with their eyes; with that sense eliminated, the theory is that the other senses - namely taste and smell—take over to elevate your meal to a whole new level. After donning your blindfold in the darkened, candlelit room, you'll soon realise that focusing on taste and smell alone can be a truly enlightening experience - provided you're not afraid of the dark! There's a choice of four different ‘surprise’ menus (including a vegetarian version), but you are left to guess exactly what’s on the plate in front of you.
