Moombai & Co.

Be transported straight to the lively streets of Mumbai at this new Parsi café-inspired restaurant.

There's no better time than the festive Diwali season to experience this lively slice of Mumbai that has emerged in a corner of the H Hotel. The nostalgia-tinged concept recreates the unique vibe of the city's famed Parsi cafés (an Indian community that has its own sub-culture and cuisine) with vintage film posters, lazy ceiling fans, retro music, and lots of quirky bric a brac - think unabashed kitsch like London's Dishoom, which ends up being endearing rather than annoying! - and a selection of authentic dishes.

Parsi specialties such as Patrani macchi (steamed fish in banana leaf) are complemented by a handful of other regional specialties (such as Sindh kadhi); Irani café essentials (a special kind of cheese toast, for example); Mumbai street food staples like vada pav; and a range of Indian classics, including kebabs, biryani, and butter chicken, to ensure there's not only something for everyone. The drinks list is Indian-inspired too, with classic cocktails given a desi makeover (chai martini, anyone?) and rare Indian whiskies and beers on offer.

Their Diwali set menu is a great way to sample a selection of greatest hits - it starts off with traditional snacks such as Dahi vada (lentil dumplings in yoghurt sauce), and melt-in-the-mouth Shammi kebabs, to move on to signature dishes like the aforementioned Parsi Patrani macchi, and Paneer khurchan (cottage cheese curry with capsicum), plus biryanis, black dal, and butter chicken, in a lavish twelve-dish affair. The dessert course veers towards traditional festive offerings too, featuring the well-loved kaju katli (a cashew sweet); gulab jamun (dumplings in syrup) and kulfi (Indian ice cream) served on a decadent fruit platter. Clocking in at AED 180 per head, it's a great value offer. The Diwali menu is available from October 18-21.
