Jon & Vinny’s

Elevated American-Italian comfort food from two of the city’s top chefs continues to delight mid-city diners.

Everyone has their Italian favorites: a lovely chopped salad, homemade pastas, meatballs and the lighter-than-air finish of a perfect Tiramisu. Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo (of Animal, Son of A Gun, Trois Mec and Petit Trois)  transformed the iconic Damiano’s Mr. Pizza on Fairfax Avenue into a contemporary American-Italian eatery. Seating is basic: the open kitchen fronts the counter seats that provide a close-up view of the action and wood bench banquettes line the walls.

The duo serves their take on classic Americanized Italian dishes, made of course, with the freshest local ingredients. Fresh from the pizza ovens, look for the burrata and tomato pizza (named the LA Woman Pizza), wood grilled garlic bread and meatballs made from a mix of ground short rib and pork shoulder. A small wine shop called Helen’s, shares the intimate streetfront space. Jon & Vinny's also serves breakfast (house made pastries are standouts) and lunch. Reservations are essential for weekend brunch and dinner.
