Genuine Liquorette

This is a liquor store with a difference: you can help yourself to the booze behind the counter - or let one of the most respected mixologists in the industry do it for you.

Styled like an upscale take on your corner bodega, the shelves here are lined with a beautiful range of spirits courtesy of beverage directer and cocktail master Eben Freeman. You can order any of these by the ounce, or let the man himself mix you up a drink using his new-fangled and brilliantly named device: a Cha-Chunker. The machine is inserted into the mouth of any canned beverage to widen the hole, so a miniature bottle of booze can be upended into the drink, making a new riff on a Mojito or Dark & Stormy that looks pleasingly ridiculous and is super quick to turn out.

There’s also a self serve refrigerator with a selection of basic beers and wine, and when you pick a bottle from the shelf, you can help yourself to the selection of mixers - what they call ‘Rough Justice Bottle Self Service’. Alternatively, order a bottle for the table, and they’ll charge you according to how much you’ve drunk.

Located in the subterranean space below Genuine Superette in Little Italy, the concept comes from hip design firm AvroKo - responsible for Dominique Ansel Kitchen, Hudson Eats, Gotham West Market amongst many notable others. They also serve food until 2am, with the likes of buttermilk fried-chicken sandwiches and golden fries.

To really go all out on the DIY vibe, Freeman runs cocktail classes here, and the graduates are welcome to tend bar anytime for anyone who dreams of cocktail greatness from behind their desk.
