Blue Star Donuts

Los Angeles’ doughnut scene is elevated to new heights at Blue Star Donuts on Abbot Kinney Boulevard.

The Portland-based doughnut shop, which has close to a cult following in the Pacific North West, has opened its first California outpost in Venice. These brioche-style doughnuts, created with an 18-hour process involving overnight fermentation, and fried in rice oil at a low temperature to minimize oil absorption, are about as good as it gets.

Made with high quality ingredients such as European butter, sustainable bread flour, whole milk and free-range eggs, it’s their creative flavor combinations that really push the boundaries. They’re anything but traditional – take the hard apple cider fritter for instance, or the blueberry bourbon basil doughnut.

The brand has also introduced some LA-specific flavors, including the pina colada, made with pineapple, coconut, rum, mint-flavored cake and shredded coconut.
