Kettle Black

Sister restaurant to Sawyer, this upmarket Italian restaurant in Silver Lake completes Sunset Junction's foodie overhaul.

The most recent project from partners Beau Laughlin, Brett Cranston and Jay Milliken - who earlier this year launched Sawyer and Clover right next door - Kettle Black takes inspiration from rustic Itaian flavors giving them a contemporary California twist. Signature dishes from executive chef Sydney C. Hunter III (a Ludo Lefebvre deciple who most recently headed up Petit Trois) range from delicate appetizers like the Orata Crudo with sea bream, tangerine vinaigrette, pink peppercorns and malden salt; to hearty entrees like Gnocchi with braised lamb, sundried tomato and baby zucchini. Throw in a few pizzas from the wood fired oven, home-made pasta dishes and delicious desserts and Sunset Junction just got the all-round fabulous Italian it has been waiting for.

Interiors are modern but remiscent of the restaurant's former incarnation of an old bank. The space, originally home to the California Bank, seats 105 guests and features a modern approach to a rustic aesthetic that supports artisanal and handmade food and cocktails. Kettle Black prominently displays an original vault from when it was first built in 1922 and focal points also include 17ft ceilings, original tile, brick, and vaulted wood truss beams. There's a daily happy hour from 5-7pm with signature cocktails including punch, daiquiri, Negroni, and Aperol Spritz as well as food offerings such as Charcuterie with salami cotto, proscuitto, gorgonzola, taleggio, and pecorino.

Pulpo with fregola sarda insalata, ‘nduja, mint, sherry vinegar; eggplant with saba vin cotto, garlic, olive oil, parmesan, chili flake; Pizza de Parma with arugula, lemon vinaigrette, proscuitto di parma, parmesan reggiano; Agnolotti filled with zucchini pesto, lemon zest; and Cacio e Pepe with cappelinni, parmesan brudo, black peppercorn. Desserts include Siciliano with sponge cake, candied pecans, smoked meringue; Vanilla Panna Cotta with macerated stone fruit; and Ricotta Fritter with strawberry sauce.
